“Kids'” movies, really?

The Secret of NIMH gave me the heebie-jeebies. I saw a DVD copy of that film in a video store recently, and shuddered. This got me thinking about other “kids” movies that disturbed me in my childhood.

Firstly, the catalyst for this post, The Secret of NIMH.

Plain scary.

Disney apparently rejected the project because it was considered too dark. Go figure.1

So many parts in The Wizard of Oz freaked me out.

Dot and the Kangaroo (1977) had an eerie soundtrack.

Rumpelstiltskin melting terrified me.

And when Dumbo got drunk, I gripped the couch. There was something sinister about the metamorphic pink elephants.
