YA Fiction Sampler: SK Picks, Round 1

Whate'er your age, it is time you partook of the scrummy-fun reading that is YA.  Here's a pic-a-nic basket sampler spanning multiple genres of some of the creamiest engrossers I've read, thus far (and I am but a neophyte!).  But I say, get in there!  If you're already devouring writing for "young adults" (pish posh), what would you suggest for inclusion in the Round 2 sampler?  Hmmm?  Or perhaps you feel one of these titles unworthy of its spot with the wicker?  Pray tell!

Straight-up Science Fiction
Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card  *  Boys.  Battle School.  Trickery.
Cinder, Marissa Meyer  *^  Cyborg Cinderella.

Science Fiction: Dystopian
Birthmarked, Caragh O'Brien  *  Babies are a tax.
The Giver, Lois Lowry  * Like The Village, only less horror.

Historical Fiction
The Wednesday Wars, Gary D. Schmidt  *  Mind-read a young boy from the past.
The Book Thief, Markus Zukas  Beautiful.

Straight-up Fantasy
Graceling, Kristen Cashore  * Great writing. Page turner.
The Princess Academy, Shannon Hale  * Well-told and weightier than the average rag-to-riches tale.

Urban Fantasy
Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Laini Taylor  *^  If you only try one on this list...
Angelfall, Susan Ee  ^  Read this instead of City of Bones.  Read anything instead...

Fantasy: Fairytale Retellings
Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine  Cheeky.

Fantasy: Adventure
Life of Pi, Yann Patel  Unusual and memorable.

Fantasy: New Zealand
Dreamhunter, Elizabeth Knox *  Unique and enchanting.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen  Timeless wit.
Half Magic, Edward Eager Fast, funny and fun (you'll read it in 2 hours).
Charlotte's Web, E. B. White  An excellent discourse on loss, love, and other tricky topics.

*There's more than one book published in this world / with these characters
^There's more coming written in this world / with these characters
